What to see in Colmar
Colmar (in French: Colmar; in Alsaciano: Colmer; in German: Colmar, between 1871-1918, Kolmar, between 1940-45) is a city and commune, located in the European community of Alsacia, it is the capital of the department of Alto Rin, in the Alsace region, France.
Colmar is first mentioned in the ninth century. Imperial Free Imperial City Member of the Alsacian Decapolis, knows a rapid development at the end of the Middle Ages and the Renaissance. During the thirty -year war was occupied by the Swedish troops in 1632 and in October 1634 by the French. Signed La Paz de Westfalia, again recovered its imperial city position. During the Franco-Neerland War change of the side several times, French in 1673 and imperial the following year, until in January 1675 it is conquered by Enrique de la Tour d'Avergne-Bouillon, after his victory in the battle of Turckheim. The Nimega treaty will legalize French annexation.
In 1871 Colmar was annexed to the German Empire and again returned to France after the signing of the 1918 armistice. Subsequently the city was again annexed to Nazi Germany during World War II, to finally return under French jurisdiction on the 2 February 1945, at the end of the battle of the Colmar bag.
